President remembers Dawoodi Bohra’s Spiritual Leader

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has sent a message of condolence on the passing of the spiritual leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community His Holiness Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, remembering his “yeoman service to humanity.”

Writing to Dr. Burhanuddin’s son, President Rajapaksa conveyed the “deepest sympathies and profound condolences” of the Sri Lankan people and especially Sri Lanka’s Dawoodi Bohra community.

“The late His Holiness Dr. Burhanuddin would always be remembered for his unremitting efforts and contributions made towards education, both religious and secular, and modernization of the community,” President Rajapaksa wrote. “His yeoman service to humanity will remain deeply entrenched. I am aware of the immense contribution of the late His Holiness to the Bohra community of Sri Lanka and undoubtedly we will take solace in the late His Holiness’s timeless message.”

Dr. Burhanuddin, the 52nd Da'i al-Mutlaq of the Dawoodi Bohras, had visited Sri Lanka on multiple occasions. In 2007, Dr. Burhanuddin visited Sri Lanka as a guest of the Government and met with President Rajapaksa. During that meeting, Dr. Burhanuddin had extended the full cooperation of the Bohra community for the Government’s efforts to bring peace to the country, along with a multimillion rupee donation to the President’s Fund on behalf of the Bohra community. President Rajapaksa had honored the spiritual leader by hosting a dinner for Dr. Burhanuddin and his delegation.
