Maldivian President arrives

 

President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday for a three day official visit on an invitation extended to by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Maldivian leader accompanied by the First Lady was warmly welcomed by External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris and Senior Minister A. H. M. Fowzie at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

The Maldivian President is accompanied by a high level delegation comprising leaders of Maldivian political parties, ministers, top level government officials and businessmen, according to the Maldivian High Commission in Colombo.

During his stay in Colombo, President Yameen is expected to meet President Rajapaksa and the senior government officials for bilateral discussions.

Before his departure to Colombo President Yameen told reporters that the two countries will sign four agreements on bilateral cooperation and the agreements would be focused on improving Maldives' health sector and police service.

The President has also noted that the two countries would discuss an existing agreement on defence cooperation and combating piracy in the region.

The Maldivian delegation is scheduled to meet with their Sri Lankan counterparts on Tuesday evening at a business forum to be held at the Hilton Hotel in Colombo.

Jumhoory Party (JP) leader Gasim Ibrahim, a Member of the Parliament of Maldives will deliver the key note address at the forum.

The visiting President will also address the business forum jointly organized by the Sri Lanka - Maldives Business Council in association with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.

During his stay in Sri Lanka, President Yameen will also meet with the Maldivian community in Sri Lanka.
