Accessibility laws for disabled persons


Giving due recognition to the rights of persons with disabilities in line with the UN Convention on the rights of Persons with Disabilities, Act No 28 of 1996 “ Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” has been amended.

An Election Special Act No. 28 of 2011 is in the implementation to make provision for a voter who is subject to a disability to be accompanied by a person when voting in elections. Accessibility Regulations No 1 of 2006 is in implementation.

A National Policy on Disability has been prepared with a view to create a disable- friendly environment. To ensure the empowerment of the PWDs (deaf and dumb) Sign Language has been recognized as an accepted language in Sri Lanka.

These laws will be implemented as a part of LLRC recommendations.
