Medium Scale Industrialists to be upgraded


Steps have been taken to upgrade the status of the small scale industrialists to the level of export industrialists engaged in diverse manufacturing activities in the 18 industrial estates belonging to the IDB to the level of export industrialists were being taken.

A meeting regarding this was held recently between the Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development, Douglas Devananda and the representatives of the Industrialists and the officials of the Industrial Board (IDB).

The meeting had been convened to further discuss of the reduction of the land rentals payable to IDB which the industrialists have been clamouring quite for some time and as to how best the allocation of the Rs.350 million set aside by the 2014 Budget to be utilized for improving the infrastructure of all the Industrial Estates of IDB in the entire Island.

The Minister after having taken into consideration the proposals put forward by the participants, instructed the relevant officials to attend to the infrastructure improvements of all the 18 Industrial Estates as well as other basic matters deemed to be of extreme necessity.

The Minister also said that it had been contemplated to develop 5 Industrial Estates as Model Industrial Estate and the work in this regard had been already commenced starting from Pallekele Industrial Estate.
