Ampara to give 320,000 MTs paddy

 

The rice bowl of the country, Ampara District, has commenced Maha season paddy harvesting which is in full swing in Akkaraipattu, Addalaichenai, Oluvil and Palamunai areas where early sowing is done.

An extent of 68,000 hectares of land has been brought under paddy cultivation with 54,000 hectares under major irrigation, 45,000 hectares under minor irrigation and 9,500 hectares under rain water harvesting, reported news.lk.

The Ministry of Agriculture said that the main feature of this year’s cultivation was that thousands of acres of land, not cultivated for over 25 years due to terrorism, have been cultivated.

The Department of Agriculture expects 320,000 MT of paddy from the harvest.

According to sources, all combined harvesters in the district are busy in the field while traditional harvesting by man power is also being utilized to reap the harvest. Harvesting in areas such as Akkaraipattu, Addalaichenai, Thirukkovil, Pottuvil, Palamunai and Oluvil are in progress.

Meanwhile, the Paddy Marketing Board has kept all stores ready in almost all areas in the district for the purchase of paddy from farmers.
