Independent Public Services Commission established

The government, implementing another recommendation of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), has established an independent Public Service Commission to ensure that there is no political interference in the public service and that recruitment and promotions in the public service are in conformity with the equality provisions in the Constitution.

The LLRC recommended to take action with regard to detention of suspects, land issues, law and order, administrative and language issues and socio-economic and livelihood issues.

In 2012, the Cabinet approved the National Action Plan on the implementation of LLRC recommendations and it was drafted by a committee headed by the Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga who was appointed to oversee the implementation of recommendations.
