Afghan President postpones visit to Sri Lanka due to unforeseen situation in Kunar

 

President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai who was expected to arrive in Sri Lanka on Sunday has postponed his scheduled three-day official visit due to the recent attack on Afghan troops in Kunar Province.

The External Affairs Ministry said in a statement that President Karzai's State visit from 23rd to 25th February 2014 has been postponed due to an unforeseen security situation that has arisen in the Kunar province, requiring his presence in Afghanistan at this time.

According to the Afghan Ministry of Defense, attack on two Afghan National Army posts on Ghaziabad highway in Kunar province killed 19 soldiers while 6 others have gone missing.

The External Affairs Ministry said the Government of Afghanistan has indicated that the visit will be re-scheduled to a mutually convenient date in the near future.
