Amarapura Nikaya bans its monks from politics

The Amarapura Sirisaddhammawansa Maha Nikaya has decided to ban all monks belonging to the Chapter from engaging in any kind of active politics or election- related matters. This decision was taken by the Executive Sangha Council of the Amarapura Sirisaddhammawansa Maha Nikaya, at a meeting held yesterday (February 24).

Accordingly, member monks of the Chapter will be compelled to refrain from participating in political rallies, taking part in protests, sathyagrahas or other forms of demonstrations, and any other activity that would lead to clashes with the police, without obtaining prior approval from the Chapter.

The Sangha Council of the Amarapura Sirisaddhammawansa Maha Nikaya which met in Balapitiya, said the decision was made in order to safeguard the dignity and honour of the Maha Sangha and the Amarapura Chapter. The Chapter has more than 5,000 Buddhist monks in temples situated in different parts of the country.
