The Government has made arrangements to open a school for prison detainees, at Watareka Prison in March this year.
With the coordination of Chandrasiri Gajadeera, Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms and Bandula Gunawardane, Minister of Education, allocated 19.2 million of Rupees for the establishment of the school.
183 selected detainees up to grade 8 and Grade 9 will be studied at the school. Students will be taught selected subjects, in accordance with the government syllabus by government school teachers. Further, these students will be given an opportunity to pursue higher education, stated the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms.
