Hamid Karzai, the President of Afghanistan is expected to be arrived in Sri Lanka this evening (March 05) for a three-day official visit.
Ceremonial welcome will be accorded to the visiting dignitary at the Presidential Secretariat, tomorrow March 6 , followed by bilateral talks between the two leaders.
Three Memoranda of Understanding between the two countries for cooperation in training of Afghan nurses in Sri Lanka, Education and Sports are due to be signed during the visit. MOUs on human resourse development, manpower and employment also are expected to be signed.
President Karzai will be accompanied by a high powered delegation including the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Higher Education, Labour and Public Health.
This will be the first-ever State visit to Sri Lanka by the President of Afghanistan. But, the two countries have had taken measures to enhance the association with each other.
Accordingly, in December 2012, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan held discussions to promote and expand the political and economic relations between the two countries. An agreement on a wide range of cooperation that covers economic, education and scientific technology was signed following bilateral talks between the Visiting Afghanistan Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Zalmai Rassoul and the Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris at the Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka in 2012.
Hamid Karzai was elected as the President of Afghanistan on 07th December 2004. He is also the first President to be elected after conduct of a democratic election.
Both Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
