Multi-religion opposition to US resolution against Sri Lanka

The National Rights Organization (NRO) comprising of multi-religious membership submitted a letter of protest against the US sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The petition addressed to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was handed over to an official at the office of the UN Representative in Colombo.

The petition, signed by religious leaders representing Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities was handed over after a protest march from the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress premises to the United Nations Office to register strong protest against the resolution to be moved by the United States against Sri Lanka.

Clergy representing all religions walked to the United Nations Office in Colombo and handed over a letter to UN officials to be sent to the UN Secretary General and UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillai.

The letter, signed by Ven. Bengamuwe Nalaka Thera, Rev. Mohan Sharma Kurukkal, Rev. Fr. Sarath Hettiarachchi and Alhaj Hassan Maulana representing Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Muslim faiths stated that the proposed resolution against Sri Lanka is totally based on information disseminated by persons with hidden agendas. The letter stated that those who supported terrorism then and those who continue to do so today are conspirators against the unitary nature of Sri Lanka.

The organisation in its letter to the UN Rights High Commissioner said the LTTE is responsible for depriving the people of their basic human rights. It said the LTTE had violated Articles 3, 5 and 13-1 of the UN Declaration on Human Rights one of which is the right to freedom of movement. However, in the past Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim persons did not have the freedom of movement free from fear of threat.

The letter also stated the organisation is determined to enlighten the world about the true situation in the country and live in unity safeguarding human rights.

Following is the text of the letter, handed over to the UN officials by the National Rights Organization;

The resolution proposed to be moved by the United States of America at the March 2014 sessions of the UNHRC against alleged human rights violations in Sri Lanka is totally based on information of questionable veracity disseminated by persons with hidden agendas and false evidence concocted by the pro-LTTE Tamil Diaspora is unreasonable, biased and unjustifiable.

We wish to bring Your Excellency’s attention to the following Articles of the UN Declaration on Human Rights:

Article 3
Everybody has the right to life, liberty and security of person.

Article 5
No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Article 13 -1
Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.

The LTTE has violated the above three Articles for a period of three decades. Sinhala, Tamil or Muslim persons did not have the freedom of movement without fear of threat. Irrespective of ethnicity, everybody was subjected to violent attacks. The Government of Sri Lanka took required steps for the restoration of the above human rights of the people.

The President of Sri Lanka, Defence Secretary and the Chiefs of the Armed Forces acted to end terrorism and it was eradicated on the 19th May 2009 to fulfill the desired objectives of the UN Human Rights Declaration of 1948. In other words, it was to safeguard the human rights of all the citizens of the country. The Tamil people did not get any freedom or liberation from the LTTE terrorism. We are greatly surprised that your organization has not taken any steps to look into the massacres of thousands of Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim people by the LTTE terrorists.

Terrorism under the leadership of Prabhakaran was carrying out to divide Sri Lanka into two. It was an attempt to violate not only the human rights but also national rights of the people. All those who supported terrorism then and those who continue to do so today are conspirators against the unitary nature of Sri Lanka. Tamil Diaspora is doing the same thing.

There is no obstruction for any Sri Lankan citizen living abroad to come back to the country. Therefore, those Sri Lankan citizens who claim they are stateless Tamils have not lost their Motherland. They can return to Sri Lanka any time and live freely as equal citizens. To be fooled by their false propaganda and accepting them to accuse Sri Lanka of human rights violations is indeed an insult to the humanity.

We are determined to enlighten the world about the factual situation in Sri Lanka and live in unity safeguarding the human rights. We write this with the firm belief that you too should oppose the attempts to level charges of human rights violations against Sri Lanka as your organization too respects humanity and also support our endeavour to live in unity protecting the human rights of our people.
