Another botanical garden to be opened


The Safari Park constructed on 500 acres of land in Ridiyagama, Hambantota will be opened before August this year (2014). According to the Ministry of Botanical Garden and Public Recreation, more than 80 percent of the construction activities of this park have been completed.

In addition, the Ministry has taken step to construct a zoological garden with an animal breeding centre on 80 acres of land in Madapatha, Piliyandala.

The Ministry also plans to set up nine botanical gardens in the nine provinces and priority has been given for the construction of botanical garden on 150 acres of land in Killinochchi.

Meanwhile, a new botanical garden has already been set up in Mirijjawila, Hambantota, while over 90 percent of the construction work of the Wet Zone botanical garden in Illukovita, Avissawella has been completed.

Addressing the media at the Botanical Garden and Public Recreation Ministry yesterday (March 19), Minister Jayarathna said the zoological and botanical gardens are presently earning a record income with the country's rapid tourism boom.
