More paddy lands returned to civilians in Mullaitivu

The Sri Lanka Government, this month, handed over more lands, previously under the control of the security forces, to their legitimate owners.

Approximately 98 acres of paddy lands in Vellamullivaikkal East in the Mullaitivu District, previously used by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), were returned to 29 resettled IDP families for cultivation. During the war, these lands had been used as runways for their aircraft operated by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorist organization.

According to the Army Directorate of Media, out of approximately 4,000 acres of land that falls within the SLAF perimeter, 518 acres had been released for farming by 2013.

The lands were handed back in the presence of the Secretary of the Ministry of Defense and Urban Development Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

Since the end of the war in May 2009, the Sri Lanka Government continues to establish ownership and release lands to their legitimate owners on an ongoing basis.
