Prof. Induruwa inducted into Internet Hall of Fame

Professor Abhaya Induruwa, who is known as the 'Father of Internet' in Sri Lanka was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame yesterday in Hong Kong for his pioneering academic and research networking to establish Internet in Sri Lanka.

According to the local technology web magazine digit.lk (diGIT Magazine), Professor Induruwa has been named as a 'Global Connector', a category which recognizes and celebrates individuals from around the world, who have made major contributions to the growth, connectivity, and use of the Internet, either on a global scale or within a specific region or community.

The Internet Hall of Fame (www.internethalloffame.org) is a recognition programme and virtual museum that celebrates the living history of the Internet and the individuals, whose extraordinary contributions have made the Internet, its worldwide availability and use, and its transformative nature possible. The Internet Hall of Fame was launched by the Internet Society in 2012.

Professor Induruwa is a renowned ICT visionary in the country who expressed his thoughts in implementing an islandwide computer network for academics and researchers, and proposed the setting up of LEARN (Lanka Experimental Academic and Research Network) to the government in 1989. He completed the project in 1995 by permanently connecting LEARN into the Internet, while acting as the principal investigator and the project leader of LEARN.

In 1992, he launched the 'LEARNmail', enabling Internet email service to the Sri Lankan academic and research community and in the same year he architected LEARN Internet and managed to secure funds from the Sri Lankan Government via the University Grants Commission to procure three 64 Kbps wireless links and associated networking devices, making it the country's first TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) WAN (Wide Area Network).

According to digit.lk, LEARN currently provides islandwide Internet connectivity to all universities, higher education institutions and research centres in the country and Prof. Induruwa's pioneering efforts also paved the way for the establishment of commercial Internet services in Sri Lanka.

Prof. Induruwa founded the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the University of Moratuwa in 1985 and served as the head till 1998 and he is also a founding member of the computer society of Sri Lanka.
