Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena requested local drug manufacturers to produce 284 essential drugs in extra quantities since the Ministry is ready to purchase them without calling for tenders.
According to a report by Daily News, this is the first time in Sri Lanka; the Health Ministry has made arrangements to purchase drugs from local manufacturers without applying the usual tender procedure.
Cabinet approval was granted recently to implement this system. Purchasing drugs from local manufacturers without calling for tenders will save a large amount of foreign exchange. The new system also ensures a smooth supply of essential drugs that will see an end to the artificially induced drug shortages. The report which quoted Health Ministry spokesman said foreign companies often violate agreements and do not supply drugs on time in the required quantities.
The new system is being implemented under the Government’s policy of protecting and strengthening local producers/manufacturers.
