The compost project of Matara, Thihagoda Pradeshiya Sabha which was commenced four years ago, has made a significant improvement.
According to Thihagoda Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Nirmal Samarasinhe, waste and solid waste collected in Thihagoda and Yatiyana, Polatugoda and Nadugala towns and other areas of Thihagoda are brought to the centre and recycled them into organic manure.
Thihagoda DS Division is predominantly an agricultural area. Paddy, vegetable, fruit and home garden cultivations are the mainstay of the rural economy, said farmer organizations in the area. Farmers prefer using organic manure to chemical fertilizer as compost manure is cheaper than chemical fertilizer, they said.
Direct and indirect employment opportunities have also been created through the project. The manure is sold to farmers, the Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman said.
According to environmentalists, the compost manufacture project has been a boon for the conservation and preservation of the environment in the locality.
