Port container handling volumes increase

The Ports Authority has recorded an increase in container volumes handled at the Colombo Port in 2013.

Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has recorded a growth of 12.3 percent twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) in transshipment operations during the last year. SLPA has handled a total transshipment volume of 1,779,882 TEUs in 2013 compared to 1,584,985 TEUs handled in 2012. Data on SLPA’s operations statistics further show that SLPA has shown a 1.8 percent growth in domestic operations in 2013 compared to 2012.

“The gradual recovery of foreign trade, attraction of new shipping lines, port efficiency and productivity improvements helped the turnaround of port services in 2013,” the Central Bank said.
