President instructs IGP to arrest drug peddlers near schools

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday instructed Inspector General of Police N.K. Illangakoon to arrest individuals who are said to be involved in drug peddling near schools.

The President ordered the IGP to start conducting special raids to arrest these drug peddlers.

President Rajapaksa issued this directive to the IGP after taking a number of public complaints with regard to drug smuggling rackets and extortion near the precincts of schools.

The President has received a number of public complaints about an organized racket through which school children in urban and suburbs are addicted to Babul, Madana Modaka and other synthetic drugs.

He has directed the IGP to bring all individuals who were involved in this racket to book soon and take legal action against them irrespective of their status.

President Rajapaksa while stressing the importance of saving the younger generation from the drug menace said that all stakeholders should join hands to wipe out this scourge from society.
