2558th Vesak celebrations in many countries


2558th Vesak celebrations were held in many cities all over the world.

Recent celebrations took place in Nepal, Cuba and Egypt organized by the respective embassies and with the participation of the Sri Lankan communities living in those countries.

Vesak is the most important religious festival for all Buddhists, which marks the birth, enlightenment and the passing away of Gautama Buddha.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kathmandu, celebrated Vesak on 15th May 2014 at the Embassy premises with the participation of the Mahasangha of Buddhist temples in Kathmandu. The Sri Lankan community in Nepal, media personnel and other devotees took part in the celebrations.

The Vesak festival organized by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Cuba was held from 14 to 18 May 2014 at the Embassy premises on a grand scale for the second consecutive year. The members of the Sri Lankan community and the students in Cuba enthusiastically took part in religious observances including offering of alms and flowers and other meritorious deeds.

The Vesak celebrations in Cairo were organized by the Sri Lanka Embassy with the participation of the Sri Lankan community living in Egypt on 14th May 2014. The Embassy premises were decorated with Buddhist flags and Vesak lanterns. The celebrations included a “Sil” campaign, alms-giving, chanting of Pirith, Dhamma sermon and Dhamma discussion and “Dansel”.
