President releases Indian fishermen

President Mahinda Rajapaksa ordered the release of five Indian fishermen in custody in Colombo as a “goodwill gesture” on Indian Prime Minister-designate Mr. Narendra Modi's swearing in ceremony.

Accordingly, there are no more Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan prisons facing charges of trespassing, but there are six others arrested at different points in the last two years on charges of smuggling drugs, according to officials at the Indian High Commission here.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed President Rajapaksa’s decision to release Indian fishermen from Sri Lankan custody.

“I welcome the step by Sri Lanka & Pakistan to release our fishermen. I welcome our fishermen brothers back home,” Modi tweeted.
