Minister Devananda thanks Israel for reconstruction assistance

“Our relations with Israel extended over many areas including political, economic, cultural, technical, educational, media, migrant workers and sports, said Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister Douglas Devananda addressing the 66th Independence Day celebration of Israel at the embassy premises.

Significant progress in reconstruction, resettlement, rehabilitation, reintegration and reconciliation has taken place at the end of the conflict. The progress has been internationally acknowledged. We appreciate the support and cooperation of Israel as a friend of Sri Lanka”, said Minister Devananda.

Further he said, Sri Lanka and Israel have maintained cooperation for many decades. Our bilateral relations grew when President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited Israel in January this year.

Israel and Sri Lanka share many common features. This year began with the visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the first visit ever by a Sri Lankan Head of State, said Israeli Ambassador to Sri Lanka Alon Ushpiz. This visit was an important milestone in the cooperation between the two countries, he said. Partnerships in agriculture, water, energy, diamonds industry, food, medical equipment, tourism and more can be achieved by the two countries, he said.

“We are continuing our endeavor to promote Sri Lankan workers to Israel. The Israel business development office in Colombo continues to operate to promote businesses,” the Israeli Ambassador said.
