President’s intervention to solve health sector issues

 

Long standing problems in the state health sector regarding salary anomalies and non-payment of disaster loans to health sector employees have been solved with the intervention of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka Freedom Health Workers Union (SLFHWU) General Secretary W Roy de Silva announced.

This was told at the press conference held by tyrade unions including All Ceylon Health Services Union, Sri Lanka Janaraja Saukya Seva Sangamaya and Sri Lanka Freedom Health Workers Union at Sri Lanka Foundation, Colombo 7 yesterday (May 28).

He said some of the major issues affecting the health service, including the problem of salary anomalies and arrears owed thereof to health employees from 2006, have been resolved as a result of their successful discussions with Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena, Public Administration Minister W D J Seneviratna and Finance Ministry and Treasury Secretary Dr P B Jayasundara on May 26.

Dr P B Jayasundara agreed to release Rs 250 million to the Ministry of Health for the purpose of paying of arrears to 40% of the health sector workers during the meeting. Dr Jayasundara has agreed to pay this sum to the health sector employees in three installments beginning from next month, he said.

W Roy de Silva was speaking at a press conference convened by health sector trade unions, among who was the Sri Lanka Freedom Government Federation.

“The meeting with these ministers was arranged following the directions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who promised us that the outcome of this meeting was going to be beneficial to health sector employees” he said.

“It was also agreed during this meeting that state health sector employees who are on a casual contract basis and have completed 180 days of service be made permanent employees,” he said.

Furthermore, Dr P B Jayasundara also agreed to pay disaster loans which are pending from 2006,”he said.

“It must be mentioned that if President Mahinda Rajapaksa had made a pledge, he had fulfilled it with responsibility,” he said.
