President Mahinda Rajapaksa instructed Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne to formulate a mechanism to provide a guaranteed price for fish. He asked him to arrive at a decision in this regard after holding joint discussions with the fishing community and officials of the Fisheries Ministry and General Treasury.
He issued these instructions at a discussion at Temple Trees on Friday (June 6) to discuss problems of the fisheries sector. The President observed granting a guaranteed price for fish could solve many problems faced by the fishing community.
The Minister drew the President's attention on the destruction caused by dynamite use for fishing carried out illegally by some fishermen.
The President contacting the IGP over the phone instructed him to take legal action against the offenders.
Discussions were held on the problems faced by the fishermen during the meeting. The progress on the Government's initiatives to develop fishing ports was also discussed.
