President Mahinda Rajapaksa will inaugurate the Lake House Mihintale Poson Aloka Pooja on June 11. The Lake House Poson program will continue until June 14.
This is the 52nd continuous Aloka Pooja being organized and sponsored by Lake House. The Aloka Pooja was the brain child of Lake House founder D.R. Wijewardene. Abans and the CEB are the co-sponsors of the Mihintale Aloka Pooja program.
The Mihintale traditional Mihindu Perahera will start at Isuru Uyana Mawatha and after parading the main street will stop at the historic Katuseya.
Anuradhapura Government Agent Mahinda Seneviratne said liquor outlets and meat stalls in the Anuradhapura District will be closed until June 15.
Rice, curry and other food items will be served at the nearly 200 dansal. A large number of public health inspectors will be deployed to supervise the hygienic conditions of the dansal and other eateries. A contingent of 5,000 uniformed police and men in mufti will be on duty round the clock.
President Rajapaksa will participate in religious observances at the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanweli Chaitiya and Sandahiru Chaitiya.
He will participate in depositing Relics in the dome of the Sandahiru Seya which is under construction.
The Poson festival traditionally commences with the conveyance of the waters of Tissa Wewa from Isurumuniya Raja Maha Viharaya up to the special Poson Pirith chanting Mandapaya in Mahamewnawa close to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi before commencement of one week Prith chanting from June 9 to 16 of which the climax will be the Sangika Dana for 100 Bhikkhus.
Nearly 100,000 devotees will observe sil at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi before the Samadhi Buddha statue.
The main Poson Bana preaching will be held at the Udamaluwa on Poson Poya day at the Ruwanweli Seya premises. A Bakthi Geetha recital will be held with the participation of Pandith Amaradewa, Nanda Malini, Sunil Edirisinghe, T.M. Jayarathne, Amarasiri Peris, Victor Rathnayake and Janaka Wickramasinghe.
During the Poson Festival Week, the Mahamewnawa will be illuminated under the patronage of the Anuradhapura Municipal Council, North Central Provincial Council, Lak Danaw Parakrama Electricals and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). The CEB will bear the expenditure of around Rs.7 million for providing additional electricity during Poson.
All arrangements have been finalized to meet the requirements of nearly two million devotees visiting Anuradhapura and Mihintale during the season.
Special attention is focused on providing drinking water, electricity, sanitation, transportation in addition to security. In addition to the existing water supply, 394 drinking water towers will be set up.
All hospitals close to Ruwanweli Seya is being equipped with medical supplies and health care staff with ambulances on stands by. A Saukya Dana campaign will also be held focusing on dengue prevention.
There will be a free train service shuttling between Anuradhapura and Mihintale during Poson.
