Sri Lanka yesterday vehemently condemned the terrorist attack at the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi Sunday night that killed 23 people mostly security forces personnel and civilian employees, and injured several others.

Issuing a statement, Ministry of External Affairs said the Government of Sri Lanka vehemently condemns the heinous terrorist attack as a "deliberate attempt to cause mayhem and damage critical infrastructure which services international travel and commerce."

The Sri Lankan government commended the Pakistani security forces for thwarting the attack.

"It is to the credit of the professionalism of the Pakistani security forces that the attack was effectively thwarted," the statement said pointing out the need for international cooperation to eliminate terrorism.

"This incident demonstrates the urgent need to further intensify international cooperation to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, in the interest of global peace and security."

"The Government and the people of Sri Lanka offer their deepest condolences to the Government and the people of Pakistan, and while sharing the pain of the bereaved families, wish those injured a speedy recovery," Sri Lanka said.
