Independence Square reconstructed


The Independence Square which has been totally reconstructed under the Colombo City Beautification Development Scheme will be vested in the public on the 13th of this month, under the patronage of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

This monument of the long colonial past that remained hidden in the expanse of Colombo city was restored and redesigned to modern grandeur by the Army and Navy personnel.

Senior Advisor on Land Management Planning and Operations Weerasena Adhikari said that the land within the Independence Square is most valuable and was maintained as a park in the past. Initially it spans the Bauddhaloka Mawatha, the Professor Stanley Wijesundera Mawatha, Reid Mawatha and the land adjacent to the SSC Grounds and the BMICH area in Torrington.

Mr. Adhikari said that the Defence Secretary identified the issue and professionals of the Urban Development Authority under his guidance along with the support of the forces contributed to the reconstruction process.
