A Strategic Urban Development Project centered round the historic Kandy City, would be launched in August this year. Initially US$ 100 Million would be spent on this project handled with the active contribution of the Defence and Urban Development Ministry.

This was revealed at a special meeting held at the Kandy Kachcheri, co-ordinated by GA Mahinda Seneviratne recently. Kandy's Mayor Mahendra Ratwatte, several Ministers and Parliamentarians, World Bank representatives and other officials were present.

It was also revealed that three sub urban main roads would be developed under this project. This would include the Getambe-Katugastota road via Gohagoda, Katugastota - Madawala road and Dharmasoka Mawatha.

Historical significance of the City of Kandy and its environmental protection will be given pride of place under this project while emphasis would also be given on attracting tourists and ensuring the safety of the pedestrians and drivers.

The Moratuwa University has already completed initial research work on the project, while land acquisition work for road development is already in progress.
