Work on 28 bridges completed

Construction of 28 bridges under a reconstruction program on 46 bridges implemented in Sri Lanka under French aid has been completed, said Unibridge Agency Chairman Philip Matiere.

He made these observations when he met Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa at the ministry recently. A discussion on the progress of the bridge construction program and future construction programs, took place between the minister and the Unibridge Agency chairman.

The French government granted Euros 22 million to widen and reconstruct 46 bridges. The bridges to be reconstructed were selected on a priority basis covering various regions on the island.

Minister Rajapaksa explaining the program for the construction of 1,000 bridges with minimum facilities said Sri Lanka has rapidly developed, the benefits of which have accrued to the people, thereby enhancing their living standards. The minister said with the enhancement of living standards, the number of vehicles used by them has gone up, which necessitated widening of the road network. It was necessary to widen narrow bridges and reconstruct dilapidated bridges to suit improved road network, the minister said.

French Ambassador M. Jean Paul Monchau, Unibridge Marketing Director Rechard Gledhill and Economic Development Ministry Additional Secretary Priyantha Mayadunna were also present.
