First Kumbal Perahera of the Kandy Esala Festival will parade the streets at the auspicious time 7.50 pm today (Aug 1).
The Kumbal Perahera commence till the 5th of this month. The final Randoli Perahera will be held on the 10th of this month and the Kandy Esala festival will be concluded at the traditional water cutting rituals to be held in the Mahaweli River at the Gatambay Thotupola on the following morning.
Historic Kandy Esala Perahera, the biggest Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka, held annually in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha enshrined at the Temple of Tooth in Kandy, draws thousands of devotees, pilgrims and visitors from abroad.
It has become a unique symbol of Sri Lanka. It is a Buddhist festival consisting of dances and colourfully decorated elephants.
Senior DIG of Central Province H.M.B. Ambanwela says special security programme has been arranged during the festival season in the Kandy area for the safety of the people.
