President inspects Kimbulawela model paddy fields

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (Aug 5) inspected the Kimbulawela model paddy fields at Sri Jayawardenepura, Kotte, where traditional local rice varieties are being cultivated using only organic fertilizer.

A strategic intervention for public awareness on health in Kotte, the Kimbulawela Walkway, encircling an organic paddy field, is just the kind of venue needed to encourage discipline in the direction of a healthier lifestyle.

Some traditional and indigenous varieties of rice such as Madatavalu, Heeneti, Pachchaperumal, Gonabaru, Rankahawanu, Pokkala, Suvandel etc have been grown in an area consisting of 65 acres. The President, during his visit to the paddy fields spoke to the farmers about the cultivations.

Members of the Maha Sangha, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene, Indigenous Medicine Minister Salinda Dissanayake and Presidential Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath also accompanied the President.
