Magampura Port records Rs.1, 236m income in seven months

The Ruhuna Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port in Hambantota has earned an income of Rs.1, 236 million during the seven months of this year, Highways, Ports and Shipping Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena said in Parliament yesterday (Aug. 8).

Minister Abeygunawardena said 70,985 vehicles have been re-exported from the Hambantota Port. He added that only 500 vehicles could be re-exported before the Hambantota Port was constructed. He said that nobody is prevented from importing vehicles via the Colombo Port. "But importers prefer to use the Hambantota Port as it is beneficial to them."

Minister Abeygunawardena said that when the second phase and the third phase of the Port are completed the Port would become a revenue generator to this country. He made these observations in response to a question raised by UNP MP Sujeewa Serasinghe.
