President attended religious activities in Kandy


President Mahinda Rajapaksa participated in several religious ceremonies in Kandy yesterday (Aug. 10).

Accordingly, the President attended a special Dharmadeshana at Presidentís House in Kandy with the participation of hundreds of devotees.

The President also opened the newly renovated Vihara Mandiraya and Awasageya of the ancient Sri Rama Viharaya, at Udawatta Kela, Kandy. The renovation has been done with allocations made by the Central Cultural Fund.

Meanwhile, President Rajapaksa watched the final Randoli Perahera of the Sri Dalada Maligawa which paraded the streets last night, with the participation of a large number of people. Around 100 elephants, including tuskers participated in the parade adding much splendor to the grand event. Thousands of Udarata, Sabaragamu and Pahatharata dancers took part in the Perahera.

The Randoli Perahera will conclude after the daytime Perahera, which parades the streets this morning. The water cutting ceremony will also to be held this morning at the Mahaweli River at Gatambe.

The traditional ceremony to inform the Head of State on the successful completion of the historic Esala Festival will also take place at Presidentís House, Kandy in the presence of President Mahinda Rajapaksa today.

The Perahera Sannasa (Scroll) on the successful conclusion of the Perahera will be handed over to President Rajapaksa by the Diyawadana Nilame Nilanga Dela.

The President will also present awards to the artistes that participated at the Perahera at Presidentís House, Kandy.
