Kandy city and suburban towns to develop


A gigantic programme has been implemented to develop the Kandy city and suburban towns at present. Under this programme, the Kandy city will be developed as a tourism and world heritage centre. A business complex and a separate lane for pedestrians will be constructed on the Kandy central bus stand premises at a cost of 200 million rupees. The central bus stand will also be developed with all facilities. The historical "Ehelepola Walawwa" will be renovated conserving its archaeological values.

The project cost 300 million rupees. At a press briefing held in Colombo today, central provincial director of the urban development authority Lalith Wijeratne said the central cultural fund and the archeological department will also support for this programme.

In addition, Gannoruwa area close to Mahaweli river will be developed as a tourism zone at a cost of 60 million rupees. Kadugannawa, Gampola, Nawalapitiya and Pussellewa town will also be developed under this programme.
