International exhibition of rubber plastics & manufacturing commences


An international exhibition of rubber, plastics and manufacturing was declared open by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Exhibition Centre in yesterday (Aug. 14).

The exhibition titled Sri Lanka Plast, Rubexpo and SIMEX 2014 started yesterday, will be held till August 16. Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen and Indian High Commissioner Y.K. Singh were also present at the opening.

More than 160 exhibitors from 15 countries including India, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Japan, Italy, Philippines and Malaysia display their products in this exhibition which had been organized with the intention of providing opportunities to expand the national export market.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen said that rubber and plastic export industries have recorded a rapid progress in the recent years. “The contribution made by the plastic and rubber industries to the Gross Domestic Production (GDP) was very high in the recent times.

“In 2013, our natural rubber exports earned 71.6 million US Dollars while rubber products imports fetched 887 million US Dollars. That was more than 4% increase compared to the previous year. In 2012 plastic exports earned US $ 57 million. In 2013 it recorded a five percent growth and brought home US $ 60.11 million. We expect that there would be 7.8 percent growth rate in the GDP this year and that plastic and rubber industries would help achieve that target,” the Minister said.
