Western Province Solid Waste Management Authority sources yesterday (Aug. 14) said that Rs.110 million has been set apart for waste management projects in the province covering schools, hospitals and local government institutions in the Colombo, Kalutara and Gampaha Districts.
The employees of the 48 Local Government institutions in the province who show more dedication towards the management of waste in their respective organizations are also recognized through the Parisara Mithuro program.
The Authority has also launched a program on waste management in 1269 schools in the province targeting over 721, 565 students under the Pivithuru Pasal Program.
This project will help inculcate the importance of waste management among the school students. "This project will help convince the students that proper waste management is a duty and responsibility of the people," he said. Separate programs for waste management are being implemented in hospitals and pre-schools in the province under the directive of Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga.
The construction of the Karadiyana Compost Production Yard (Phase II) is also to be commenced soon.
