Army Para Games attract foreign participants


The Army War Heroes rendered differently-abled while in service to eliminate the 30 year long terrorism will showcase their talents at the 17th Sri Lanka Army Para Games 2014 at the Sugathadasa Stadium from August 20 to 22.

Out of the 1,200 participants around 400 athletes will display their talents during the three days, Para Games chief organiser and Security Forces Headquarters Commander-Mullaitivu Major General Jagath Dias told a press conference at the Defence Ministry Media Centre.

Major General Dias said this event held for 16 consecutive years turns a new page this year by opening the game for the differently-abled heroes from the Armies from Asian countries.

Major General Dias said India, Pakistan and Singapore have already confirmed participation. Vietnam and Indonesia have also expressed willingness to take part and hoped they would confirm their participation.

He said that on a concept of Army Commander Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, retired personnel from the Army will also participate in the Army Para Games from this year.

A result of this game, athlete Pradeep Sanjaya was able to obtain a bronze medal at the Para Olympic Games in London and France, he added.
