76 Indian fishermen released

Seventy six (76) Indian fishermen who were in Sri Lankan custody were released yesterday (Sep. 30) on the direction of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

This is a batch of fishermen who were arrested when they violated the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) in early September.

President Rajapaksa ordered release of Indian fishermen several times earlier too as a goodwill measure to India.

Release of Indian fishermen in custody in Colombo as a goodwill gesture on Indian Prime Minister-designate Mr. NarendraModi's swearing in ceremony in May this year was one of such occasions that the Government released them.
