Public Utilities Commission announces new electricity rates

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka has announced the approved electricity tariffs, in line with the government policy directive on the reduction of electricity tariffs for the domestic sector.

The new electricity rates will retroactively be effective from 16th September 2014.

According to the President Mahinda Rajapaksa's instructions, the new domestic rates have been reduced by 25 percent.

Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) W.B Ganegala said the 25 percent reduction will be taken from the next month's electricity bills of domestic consumers.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet Spokesman and Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella said the reduction is applicable island wide to all households and the reports that say it is only applied for those who consume less than 300 units are baseless.

The details of the reduced tariff structure is available at the Public Utilities Commission's website.
