National Housing Policy presented to President


The National Housing Policy formulated by the Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Ministry was launched at the World Habitat Day celebration at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium yesterday (Oct. 6). Minister Wimal Weerawansa presented this policy to President Mahinda Rajapaksa on this occasion.

The Ministry has obtained the views of the professionals and the general public for the formulation of this policy covering the entire housing development process in the country.

The construction of houses for families below the poverty line, living in unworthy settlements with the sponsorship of the Government is also included in this policy. This policy also envisages for the construction of houses for families in the low and middle income level with the support of the Government and private sector too. Construction of permanent houses for people living in rented houses is also envisaged by this policy.

Students living in the underserved settlements in Colombo who showed exceptional talents at the drama contest organized by the Ministry received awards and certificates from the President.

The President also presented awards to the best management authority among the private and public housing schemes.

Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna and senior Ministry officials also participated.
