The Yal Devi night mail service to Jaffna was inaugurated Tuesday (Oct. 14) evening from the Colombo Fort Railway station, after a lapse of 24 years.

It was inaugurated by the Post and Telecommunications Minister Jeewan Kumaratunga with the handing over of a mail bag to be sent to Jaffna to Railways General Manager B. A. P. Ariyarathe.

Postmaster General D.L.P. Rohana Abeyratne said, “The existing procedure is for post office officials to collect the mail from Pallai railway station. I will be the first official to take the mail to Jaffna. The Deputy Postmaster General will receive it at the Jaffna railway station.”

He said with the extension of the railway service to Jaffna, a fast and efficient postal delivery system would be provided to the people of the North.
