Northern Expressway construction in two months

 

Marking another milestone in the Expressway network, plans are afoot for the launch of work on the Northern Expressway Project within the next two months. This will link the Northern capital Jaffna to the highway network.

It is intended to implement the Northern Expressway Project in eight stages. Project Minister Nirmala Kotalawala said that work on two stages is being planned to be mooted within the next two months.

This highway was long expected by the people of this country. As the people expected to travel towards the South, the people were eagerly awaiting the construction of this road to travel to the North as the Central region, said the Minister.

It is a road planned for several years. It is indispensable for everyone. Work on the Northern Expressway is intended to be carried as a priority project under the mega development drive launched by the Government, he added.

The intention is to create a broad road network in the North and East as well as within the internal parts of the country. The Northern Expressway which will have four lanes is intended to the expanded to six lanes. There will be 10 interchanges, the Minister explained.

The plan also includes developing Gampaha, Mirigama, Rambukkana and Dambulla as main urban economic centres. Another target is to develop tourism in the Kandy, Dambulla and Kurunegala Districts, the Minister further stated.
