Second reading of Budget 2015 passed


Parliament Saturday passed the second reading of the Appropriation Bill for next year by a majority of 100 votes.

The US$ 14 billion budget passed with 157 members of the parliament voting in favor and 57 opposing it. Opposition parties, UNP, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Marxist party Democratic National Alliance (DNA) voted against the budget.

The 2015 Appropriation Bill was then referred to the Committee of the whole Parliament.

The committee stage debate on budget 2015 is scheduled to commence on November 03 and will continue daily except for Sundays till November 24. The final vote of the budget 2015 is scheduled to be taken at 5.00 p.m. on November 24.

The Appropriation Bill estimated the total government expenditure for the year 2015 at Rs 1.812 trillion while targeting a budget deficit of 4.4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) and a growth rate of 8.2 percent for next year.

Making the reply speech, Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa said the budget has been presented with a five-fold vision to steer the country forward beyond the year 2020.
