President Mahinda Rajapaksa who celebrates his 69th birthday today stand out as the most outstanding Sri Lankan leader in recent times, having eliminated terrorism and restoring peace in the country.
The President also steps into the 10th year of his election to the office tomorrow, November 19. A Series of religious ceremonies island wide have been organized to mark the President's birthday and the anniversary of his election as the President. This marks the continued commitment of the President to the tasks of nation building, with emphasis on strengthening peace, post-conflict reconciliation and development.
President was elected to the office first time at the 2005 Presidential Election and was sworn in on November 19, 2005. He was re-elected for a second term of office at the Presidential Election held on January 26, 2010, with the Sri Lankan electorate recognizing him as the national leader who liberated the country from the LTTE, and set the country on the path to peace, reconciliation and rapid economic development.
Born in Weeraketiya in the Southern rural district of Hambantota President had a long and hard journey to the top, first as an MP, then Minister, Opposition Leader, Prime Minister and finally the fifth Executive President of Sri Lanka.
President Rajapaksa is also the Chair of the 53 – member Commonwealth of Nations, the first Sri Lankan Head of State to hold that office.
