Sri Lanka Railways to reconstruct Anuradhapura- Omanthai rail track

With the restoration of train services from Colombo to Jaffna last month after a 24-year lapse, Sri Lanka Railways plans to reconstruct the rail track between Anuradhapura and Omanthai.

The 62-km segment between Anuradhapura- Omanthai will be reconstructed under an Indian Line of Credit.

The Government has taken the necessary measures to speed up travel by train after the construction of the Northern rail track as well as the Thalaimannar rail track.

Sri Lanka Railways plan to increase operating speed of trains from 80 kmph to 100 kmph on all the major rail lines in the island.

Subsequent to the completion of the Northern Railway Line from Omanthai to Jaffna and the reconstruction of the 101 km Thalaimannar railway line from Medawchchiya, the Railway Department plans to complete the remaining sections up to Kankasanthurai from Jaffna on the Northern Line and Thalaimannar by the end of this year.

Once completed the trains could be operated at a maximum speed of 100 kmph between Kankasanthurai and Omanthai; and Thalaimannar and Medawchchiya sections.
