Mahinda Rajapaksa, candidate for further Presidential term

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the largest party in the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has unanimously decided to field President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Party's candidate at the next Presidential election.

The SLFP Senior Vice President and Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva proposed the name of Party Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and it was seconded by Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne.

During the meeting chaired by President Rajapaksa, the SLFP Central Committee appointed several election campaign committees at electoral and district level to campaign for Rajapaksa.

After a Proclamation calling a snap Presidential election is issued today as the President completed his four-year term in office at midnight yesterday, the Elections Commission will announce the election schedule.

The Elections Commissioner would fix the date to call for nominations upon receiving the special Gazette Notification.
