President signs proclamation for Presidential Election


President Mahinda Rajapaksa today signed the official proclamation declaring his intention to hold a Presidential Election seeking another term.

This will be his third election for the Executive Presidency. He was first elected on 17th November 2005 and was re-elected for a second term on January 26, 2010. He took oaths as President for the second term on November 19, 2010 and completed 4 years in office on November 19, 2014.

Yesterday the main constituent of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Central Committee unanimously decided to field President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Party's candidate at the next Presidential election.

During the meeting chaired by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the SLFP Central Committee appointed several election campaign committees at electoral and district level to campaign for Rajapaksa.

After the Proclamation calling a snap Presidential election is issued today as the President completed his four-year term in office at midnight yesterday, the Elections Commission will announce the election schedule.

The Elections Commissioner would fix the date to call for nominations upon receiving the special Presidential proclamation on this election.
