Indian PM thanks President Rajapaksa for fishermen release

President Mahinda Rajapaksa Wednesday (Nov 26) held a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 18th SAARC Summit in Kathmandu, Nepal.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed a range of issues important to both nations regionally and individually.

This is the third meeting between the President Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Modi since the latter took over as Prime Minister in May this year.

The Indian PM has thanked the Sri Lankan President for pardoning and subsequent release of five Tamil Nadu fishermen, who were sentenced to death in Sri Lanka.

President Rajapaksa commuted the death sentence and the Indian PM said the gesture was appreciated throughout India.

President Rajapaksa also reiterated an invitation extended to Modi to visit Sri Lanka and the Indian PM wished "good luck" to Rajapaksa for the January polls in Sri Lanka.
