Foreign banks in Sri Lanka committed to make significant contribution to economy

Foreign banks in Sri Lanka are expected to demonstrate a greater participation in economic activities and to make significant contribution to the island's economy, the Central Bank says.

Governor of the Central Bank Ajith Nivard Cabraal has chaired one-to-one meetings with the foreign banks held recently to discuss the progress made on their expected contribution under the financial sector consolidation process of the Central Bank.

"In this regard, the foreign banks have expressed their commitment to operate as intermediaries of their entire international branch network to channel funds and expertise to several sectors of the economy," the Central Bank of Sri Lanka said in a statement.

Several regional representatives of foreign banks were also present at these meetings, the bank said.
