Large weekly fair to be opened in Embilipitiya


The largest weekly trade fair in the country built in Embilipitiya is to be opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa tomorrow (Dec. 3).

The Urban Development Authority, on the instructions of Defence and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa has begun work to develop the Embilipitiya town which has been identified as a major economic centre in the Sabaragamuwa Province under the Mahinda Chintana Policy framework.

The weekly trade fair project commenced in the month of May 2013 in a three acre government owned land, under a plan designed by the Urban Development Authority. Accordingly, four similar type of two storied buildings have been constructed which has 64 shops altogether facing the road-front in the public fair premises.

The new consumer trade fair also consists of two fruit stalls which have enough space for over 12 fruit venders. In addition, two fish stalls have been constructed according to the plan which also provides a suitable setting for over 8 fishery item sellers.

Altogether around 700 venders could be accommodated in the general area of the new added facility which is worth of over 150 million rupees.
