The ground breaking and the foundation laying ceremony flagging off the construction work at the USD150 million Colombo City Centre was held yesterday (Dec. 02) at Colombo 2.
The foundation stone was laid by Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development.
This 48-stories mixed-use lifestyle centre is the first project by the Colombo City Centre Partners, a joint venture between Abans Group and SilverNeedle Hospitality of Singapore. Scheduled to be completed in early 2018, the total investment for the project is US $ 150 million.
The first five levels of the Centre will consist of a 230,000 square feet lifestyle retail mall and this is expected o be ready in the next two years.
Above the mall will be a 200-room NEXT Hotels, the flagship brand of SilverNeedle Hospitality, and the first such hotel to be launched in Asia, after Australia. This would be a four stars plus property. The upper levels of the Colombo City Centre will offer 180 residential units where the residence will enjoy exclusive Club amenities and use of the Sky Terrace.
“It is important that we work with partners who share our vision of creating a landmark that will draw in the community, including both locals as well as expatriates,” said Iqbal Jumabhoy, Chairman of the JV and Managing Director and Group CEO of SilverNeedle Hospitality. He also disclosed that without any publicity over 15% of apartments have being a, marketed.
“With the ground-breaking and foundation stone laying completed, we will now embark on our marketing and sales efforts of the residences,” Jumabhoy concluded.
“Currently there is no place in Sri Lanka where the whole family can go and enjoy themselves. We want to provide entertainment for Sri Lankans and their families, as well as tourists, with a tenant mix of local and international brands, a cinema and food court. This way, children and their parents will be able to spend valuable family time together,” said Mrs. Aban Pestonjee, Director of the JV and Chairperson of the Abans group of companies.
A team of internationally-renowned partners have been engaged to work on this project. The lead designer of this project is Aedas, the award-winning global architecture firm. Gensler, the world’s biggest collaborative design firm, is responsible for the interior of the hotel and residences.
